The Palestinian source said that Venezuela’s decision to relocate its embassy had been finalized after a meeting between Palestinian officials and Venezuela’s foreign minister, Elias Jaua, at the presidential palace in Ramallah on Saturday.
He said that after the meeting, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua informed the Palestinians that his government has agreed to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and has asked the Palestinians to authorize the move.
The meeting was one of the last before the foreign ministers of the Arab world and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meet in Sharm El-Sheikh next week, in which the Palestine issue is likely to be among the top agenda items.
Areikat said that Abbas will be meeting the foreign ministers of the Arab world and the OIC in Sharm El-Sheikh next week, where the Palestinian Authority is expected to play a prominent role.
Areikat said that the Palestinian president had welcomed the US’ initiative to move the US embassy to the eastern part of Jerusalem, and that this had caused the West Bank-based PA to accept a similar move by the Latin American country.
The Palestinian source said that Abu Mazen believes that Venezuela’s decision to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem is proof of support from Washington and Tel Aviv for the US initiative.
The Palestinian source said that in an interview on Al-Jazeera channel on Saturday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that Venezuela will not accept the US move to recognize the occupied city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and that the Venezuelan government will not support the move.
