History
AutoCAD evolved from the original CAD program developed by American architects and engineer Peter Gutmann in 1981. The program was a response to a request by Harold E. Stein, chairman of the New York City Planning Commission, for a “proper graphic language” for the drafting of conceptual plans.
The program was named AutoCAD as a way to differentiate from other CAD packages on the market. This has been a common practice in the CAD software industry for the last 30 years.
AutoCAD was first released in December 1982, and was designed to integrate directly with the computer hardware of the day – systems that ran on either minicomputers or personal computers. It was priced at US$10,000 (the equivalent of around US$50,000 in 2013). With AutoCAD's initial release, four major generations of the CAD software were released.
The first generation (version 1.0) was released in December 1982 and was designed to run on minicomputers. Version 1.1 was released in December 1983, and version 2.0 was released in May 1984. The latest release, version 13, was released in July 2017.
Since version 2.0, the graphics engine that drives AutoCAD has been developed in a shared-source model with other applications. The company has continued to make improvements to the engine and releases frequent upgrades, called AutoCAD versions, that incorporate new features, usability and stability improvements, and bug fixes.
The second generation (version 2.0) is still the most widely used. It was the first AutoCAD release, and set the standard for many aspects of the program.
Generation 3 (version 3.0) is the second major release of AutoCAD, and was released in February 1989. The release included a 3D, primitive-based drawing engine, with the ability to create 3D models. It also improved the support for graphics tablets.
