Save a Tree, Save Some Paper!

Learning Objectives:

Students will appreciate the importance of trees through interactive activities.

Day 1 (1.5 hours):

Brainstorming Bonanza (20 minutes):
- Start with a guessing game! Show various objects students use at school (books, pencils, tissues). Ask: What do all these things have in common? Guide them towards the answer: paper!
Tree Treasure Hunt (30 minutes):

Head outdoors (weather permitting) or use pictures. Assign students to find different parts of a tree (trunk, branches, leaves). Back in the classroom, discuss the importance of each part with a picture reference:
- Trunk: Provides support and stores water (Show a picture of a ).
- Branches: Hold leaves and allow trees to reach sunlight (Show a picture of ).
- Leaves: Take in sunlight and convert it into food for the tree (photosynthesis) (Show a picture of ).

Paper Trail (30 minutes):
- Show pictures of paper products students use daily (notebooks, tissues, paper towels). Ask: Where does paper come from? Briefly explain paper is made from wood pulp, which comes from trees.
Deforestation Dilemma (20 minutes):
- Show contrasting pictures of healthy forests and areas affected by deforestation . Discuss the negative effects of cutting down trees (soil erosion, habitat loss, reduced air quality).

Day 2 (1.5 hours):

Introduce the "3 R's" of saving paper with pictures:
- Reduce: Encourage double-sided printing, using all available space on worksheets, and considering digital alternatives (e.g., online assignments).
- Reuse: Show students how to turn scrap paper into notepads by gluing them onto cardboard squares. Decorate with construction paper!
- Recycle: Discuss the importance of recycling paper and putting it in the designated bin with a picture of a recycling symbol.

Paper Power! (45 minutes):
- Let's get crafty! Students create collages using recycled paper scraps . Encourage them to use their imaginations and create animals, landscapes, or anything they like! (Optional: Add paint for a vibrant touch.)
Magnificent Magnifiers (15 minutes (Optional)):
- Hand out magnifying glasses (optional) and have students examine the recycled paper scraps. Can they see tiny wood fibers? Briefly explain this is what paper is made from!

Wrap Up (15 minutes):

Assessment:

Observe student participation in discussions and their understanding of the concepts.
Look at their completed projects (notepads, collages) to see if they used recycled materials.
