Thought Tickler is a drawing-based program that provides a view-based method for organizing and retrieving ideas. It does not store the thoughts directly in the program; it stores them in a file, much like a digital notebook program. But unlike a notebook, the files are not organized by the date and time when they were generated; they are organized by topic and by an ordered list of the ideas themselves.
In the program, an idea is represented as a node in a hierarchical tree structure. Nodes are connected by "branches" (a "topic" in the program's terminology). The shape of the tree node represents the  idea; the tree's branches represent the idea's subtopics. In addition to the ability to draw in the program, Thought Tickler also provides a set of tools for project management and analysis. 
The way ideas are listed is very similar to the way you would list an ordered list of text. The program, for example, might say "The idea was to walk out of the burning building safely." The program's view might then have a list with items of the form, "Walking out safely," "Walking out without injury to self or property," "Walking out with proper equipment (fire hose)." In the view, this list could also have an outline to represent the number of ideas present in the list. For example, there might be five lines for this list. The outline could say 1) "Walking out safely," 2) "Walking out without injury to self or property," 3) "Walking out with proper equipment (fire hose)," 4) "Having wet clothes," and 5) "Going out the back door."
Another way in which Thought Tickler offers a view-based way of thinking about ideas is through the use of metaphor. As in the case of a notebook, the metaphor is that the program is a "big elephant. " The method used to draw things is that you draw a line from a big circle (the elephant) to the smaller circles (the trunk and the tentacles). Thought Tickler is not meant as an easel, sketchbook, or painting application. Rather, it's meant to be a way of processing thoughts in the form of letters.
In the literal sense, Thought Tickler provides no frame around a thought. But the frame it does provide is very useful for processing thoughts. A graphical frame can provide a structure for processing a thought. By pre-aligning the letters in a thought, the structure of the thought can become clear. In the same way, the frame can help organize a mind when it is going through many ideas. It can serve as a way to process ideas that would otherwise go into an elaborate mind map.
Because Thought Tickler works in the form of text, it provides the flexibility to process thoughts as words. Therefore, it can be used to process words when they are read, as you are on the bus or train, when doing cognitive work, or when working in a screen.
