Cuba, mediados del siglo XIX
A la isla caribeña arriba un barco portador de una siniestra carga. Kaweka es una de ellas, una muchacha que vivirá en primera persona el horror de la esclavitud en la hacienda del cruel marqués de Santadoma, pero que pronto demostrará a quienes la rodean que posee la facultad de comulgar con Yemayá. Esta es una diosa voluble que, en ocasiones, le concede el don de la curación y le proporciona la fuerza para liderar a sus hermanos de raza en la lucha por la libertad contra unos opresores que han logrado esclavizar sus cuerpos, pero no sus almas.

Lita, una joven mulata, es hija de Concepción, la mujer que lleva toda la vida sirviendo en casa de los marqueses de Santadoma, en pleno barrio de Salamanca, al igual que hicieron sus antepasadas en la Cuba colonial. A pesar de tener estudios y ambición profesional, la precariedad laboral obliga a Lita a recurrir a los todopoderosos señores de Santadoma en busca de una oportunidad en la banca propiedad del marqués. A medida que se sumerge en las finanzas de la empresa y en el pasado de esta riquísima familia, la joven descubre los orígenes de su fortuna y decide emprender una batalla legal en favor de la dignidad y la justicia, que merecen tanto su madre como todas las mujeres que entregaron sus vidas al servicio de unos blancos que nunca las trataron como a iguales.

A fascinating story narrating two black women’s passionate struggle for freedom in two different times—colonial-enslaved Cuba and twenty-first-century Spain.

Cuba, mid-nineteenth century
 A ship bearing a sinister cargo reaches the Caribbean island. Over seven-hundred women and girls abducted from their native Africa arrive to work to exhaustion in the sugarcane fields and give birth to future slaves. Kaweka is among them, a young woman who will experience first hand the horror of slavery in the cruel Marquis of Santadoma’s hacienda. But she will soon show those around her that she has the ability to communicate to Yemayá, a fickle goddess that at times grants her the gift of healing and gives her the strength to lead her brothers and sisters in their fight for freedom against the oppressors who have enslaved their bodies, but never their souls.

 Lita, a young mulatto woman is Concepción’s daughter, a woman who has spent her entire life working as a servant in the house of the marquises of Santadoma, right in the Salamanca district, just as her ancestors did before her in colonial Cuba. In spite of being an educated woman and having professional ambitions, work scarcity forces Lita to turn to the almighty sires of Santadoma for an opportunity at the bank owned by the marquis. As she goes deeper into the company’s finances and the past of this wealthy family, she begins to uncover the origins of their fortune and decides to wage a legal battle in favor of dignity and justice for her mother and all the other women who gave their lives at the service of white people who never treated them as equals.
