Since its establishment in 1720, the Royal Danish Society of Sciences has gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious learned societies in the world. The aim of the Society is to encourage and support research, and to act as a scientific forum for its members and their associates. The Society’s activities are coordinated by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and are centred on three broad sections:

Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Nuclear Physics and Radiation Sciences
History and Culture
Research, publishing and the dissemination of scientific knowledge are an integral part of the Society’s work. Most of the research carried out by its members is published in peer-reviewed international journals or in proceedings of the annual scientific conferences held by the Society. The Society also publishes a number of scientific, general and specialist reference works, including the first issue of its journal Annales de Biomédecine.
The most frequently accessed publications are listed in the Annual Bulletin. Other publications include the monthly series Mogens Lassen and Klaus Ursenbacher, the quarterly journal Elsevier: Integrative Biology, the review series Archives of Clinical and Experimental Neurology and Annales de Chimie.
Research and teaching in the Institute of Biochemistry, University of Copenhagen
The Institute of Biochemistry is part of the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Copenhagen. It was founded by Poul Møller in 1980.
Poul Møller’s long-standing interest in biochemistry led to him deciding to establish the Institute of Biochemistry in 1980. He felt that a world-class department of biochemistry should be part of a leading university and that the University of Copenhagen in particular, as one of the foremost universities in the world, would be a natural home for such a department.
Since its inception, the Institute has grown, and in 2004 it moved from its original location on Amager (a large island in the city of Copenhagen) to a new complex in the Osterbro section of Copenhagen.
The scope of the Institute’s research covers all major areas of modern biochemistry. The department has a strong international reputation, and the research carried out in the Institute is regularly published in high-profile journals, such as Nature, Science, Cell and PNAS. The Institute has won many prestigious awards and prizes. The most recent one was the 2015 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
