SNMP is a standardised protocol, set out in RFCs, that is used to monitor and manage the status of most networking devices. A Management Information Base (MIB) defines the information in the protocol, and defines what can be said about it. If a device sends a management request to an SNMP agent it will receive an answer in the form of a reply.SNMP is used for a wide variety of purposes, including remote monitoring and controlling network equipment. SNMP Authentication:
SNMP is defined by two types of authentication mechanism, the Simple Authentication Protocol (SAS), which is a simple mechanism that allows secure access only to specific IP addresses, and the Security-Asserted-MIB (SAM-MIB), which can be used for access to any system. The basic approach with the SAS is to define a set of IP addresses, or hosts, and prevent access to any others.
The SAM-MIB can be used to define any or all SNMP authentication mechanisms.
NOTE: SAS can also be used with MIBs (MIBs which define the Management Information Base) and with Trap messages.

The Agent is the software process or program which understands the MIB and acts on requests from a manager.
SNMP is specifically designed to be used with a network management controller (NMC), which could either be a dedicated management station, or a hardware device that can manage many devices.
If the NMC can communicate with all the network devices it should be connected to using a standard communications network, such as Ethernet, then it acts as a SNMP manager. This type of NMC is usually used for remote network management. If the NMC is plugged into a network hub, a router or a switch then it will be acting as a network router or switch.
SNMP requires a specific management protocol to be used to make the network manager aware of what the network is doing.
