Physical Properties
High melting point: due to strong covalent bonds that hold the carbon atoms together, it requires more energy to overcome those strong forces. Melting graphite requires the entire structure to be melted and to break all the bonds.
Insoluble in water: graphite is entirely carbon, thus there are no dipoles within the structure, and the attractions between the water (solvent) molecules and the carbon atoms cannot overcome the strong covalent bonds of graphite.
Good conductor of electricity: Electron mobility is present as there is one delocalized valence electron for each carbon atom. With the free flow of electrons, graphite makes a good conductor of electricity.
