Microsoft has announced it will no longer provide its Windows operating system to the US government in retaliation against recent US legislation that would force software to be opened to scrutiny.
In a statement released Friday, Microsoft said the following:
As of December 31, 2015, Microsoft will no longer provide its Windows operating systems or related services to the US Federal Government.
Microsoft will continue to participate in open standards-based software development that advances the availability, reliability and security of customer information and user data.
Microsoft will continue to support Windows and Office installations, and will continue to service Windows and Office customers on a stand-alone basis.
We will also continue to participate in open standards-based software development that advances the availability, reliability and security of customer information and user data.
Companies are generally leery of government contracts because of the potential for even the slightest lapse in security to be seized upon by foreign governments. In this case, it’s more than just a tinge of paranoia. The US government recently passed legislation that will require any software deployed with US citizens to be made available to the scrutiny of US agencies. This is in contrast to the current state of affairs. Software has generally been provided under a “lobbyist loophole” to avoid scrutiny.
Microsoft has long maintained a presence in the US market, and has been a stalwart supporter of the open source ecosystem, and its competitors. This may be a sign that the company is shifting its strategy to focus on other markets in which it may not be so well-positioned.
James Kendrick, the Chief Security Strategist at Darktrace and regular SecurityWeek contributor, says the decision by Microsoft may be a reaction to bad press about the company’s handling of data breaches.
“I think they see the writing on the wall in this regard and may be reacting with a ‘Hail Mary’ game, trying to lure security firms to their Windows-based platform,” Kendrick told SecurityWeek. “But the competitive landscape in data breach forensics is rapidly evolving and Microsoft can’t simply market their platform as a safe haven. They must evolve to keep pace with this new market, which includes more and more blockchain-enabled forensics techniques.”
