The immediately after she detects an extremely faint radio signal coming from a star system 22 light years away, she puts her life on hold to follow up on it. As the years pass, Arroway's life is consumed by the search.
The novel focuses on the life of the woman who is exploring the cosmos and how her life is affected by her life's work and the interplay of her personal life and the search for life.
Development
Author Neal Stephenson said of the novel's development:
"It is that great phenomenon of creative writing which turns an idea into something almost (but never quite) real; and which makes it extraordinarily difficult to stick to when you have a sketch for a story. A novel begins to ferment, in a sense, even as it is still just a paragraph or a few pages long. The plot that you originally had as a proposition is by now so complicated that it has taken on a life of its own, and all the best things that you had initially imagined as plausible have been proven wrong, and their being wrong has led you to rethink certain other details. So that by the time you are ready to sit down to write, the novel has mutated into a new creature, in some ways similar to a cephalopod, with tentacles of plot radiating out from its head. In order to get a grip on it again, you have to take a deep breath and just do it. That, of course, is one of the reasons why writing a novel is so much more demanding, on the whole, than writing short stories. The other reason is that by the time you have finished with it, the novel is likely to be rather more than twice your age. And you have to start all over again."
Publication
The novel was published on January 19, 2000 by Doubleday, and began a marketing campaign with a high-profile advertising campaign in various publications including the New York Times. The novel would be published in the United States by Doubleday, followed by publication in the United Kingdom and Australia by Pan.
Stephenson wrote in a story on the New York Times website that the first printing for the United States was 50,000 copies. The book was re-released on June 20, 2009 by Random House.
Reception
Reviews of the novel were mixed. Booklist gave the novel an "Excellent" rating and stated "As this book moves along, it takes on a mesmerizing momentum and maintains an ethereal
