The fourth and final season of the original science fiction series Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) aired in 1973 with Patrick Stewart as Captain James T. Kirk. The legendary Adventures of Superman radio series spun out from Star Trek and introduced the concept of the 'Kryptonite' element.
The end of the classic television series Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) in 1973 was a particularly tumultuous time for the series and the nascent franchise. In a year when TOS was airing on NBC, NBC was at the center of a two-part Watergate scandal that resulted in the dismissal of many network employees. TOS creator Gene Roddenberry, the actor Leonard Nimoy, and several other cast members were subsequently fired from the series. The original television series won its time slot with the lowest viewership figures in the history of the American television network (a figure that would subsequently be eclipsed by the success of the network's 1985-87 NBC Saturday morning lineup of Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man action figures), and cancellation was almost inevitable.
The Original Series, also known as TOS, featured the first interracial kissing scene on American network television, performed by the actors William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols. The scene was hastily added to the series as a consequence of a production crew's realization that a kissing scene was now required. The scene was a result of creative tension on the series, stemming from the fact that the Star Trek episode "The Paradise Syndrome" was generally not seen as an installment of Star Trek, but rather a feature-length motion picture. Gene Roddenberry had wanted to make the episode a part of the series as well, but the producers wanted it to be a motion picture.
In 1973, Dr. McCoy was played by DeForest Kelley. After the series ended, Kelley went on to star in the ill-fated 1975 TV film Jaws 2 and had a recurring role in ABC's 1980 series Wonder Woman. Kelley remained an outspoken proponent of the show's off-screen continuity and of the significance of the character of Spock.
Later he guest starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and made several guest appearances on the original series. In the 1990s, Kelley appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation spinoff, Star Trek: Generations, in which his character, Dr. McCoy, was later portrayed by John Billingsley.
