This specialized care includes the prevention, recognition, evaluation, and care of injuries associated with exercise and sport. Many certified athletic trainers are also involved closely in rehabilitation of the athletes injuries and prepara-tion for return to activity. A professional who has worked to attain certification in the field of athletic training is designated Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC). This certification indicates to the public that the individual with this level of training is competent at, engaged in, and recognized by the profession. In 1991, the American Medical Association recognized athletic training as an allied health profession. With this designation came the advent of athletic training as a legiti-mate career. THE NEED FOR ATHLETIC TRAINERSNever has there been a greater need for athletic trainers than today. In 1972, federal legislation was enacted that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex as to participation in athletics in schools. Title IX, as it was called, also governed overall equity of treatment and opportu-nity to participate. This legislation accorded female athletes equal treatment under the law. Since the enactment of Title IX, the number of females participating in athletics has grown substantially. Youth sports have also seen a large increase in participation. With the number of individuals participating in athletics at an all-time high, the need for qualified people to support their overall well-being is considerable.The National Federation of High School Associations (2007 2008 survey) estimates that at present more than 20 million children are involved in youth sports, and nearly 7.5 million in high school sports.
