The book begins with a gentle introduction to the basic concepts such as set, sequence and function. The next chapters cover the basic concepts such as integers, lists and arrays. The next chapters cover the arrays which is the basis for the next set of chapters which covers Boolean variables, loops, conditions, decision and a variety of functions. The final two chapters are devoted to Mathematical Induction and an application of mathematical induction. The index is a little cluttered but this adds to the appreciation of the book.
Overall I rate this book as a good reference for the beginner. The book covers topics in a very accessible manner. It starts from the basics to concepts and does not jump between topics. This is great because we usually find examples and proofs in books that we have never encountered before. This book serves as a ready reference. The key point is that it should be available to the students of Discrete Mathematics on a shelf. As is often seen in reference books it is hard to know which references are useful and which are not. In this book it is very clear which questions and exercises are the most relevant and those that should be looked at first. In spite of the conciseness of the explanations this book takes a few pages to introduce the concepts. It would have been more concise if there was some break in the flow of the book.
Dear Sruthi,I am reading the book by Michael Borcherds and I must say that it is very good. I have already started taking the courses and I would recommend this book to anyone who is a beginner. I have not been able to follow the corresponding courses in real time (as it is usually done), as the courses were not available in my college at that time. This book is undoubtedly the best book I have come across for Discrete Math. Kudos to the author and the publisher. I would like to recommend to all the beginners a few more book titles by the same author.
