Musk’s proposal would give TVA shareholders the first right to buy into a proposed national grid that would be owned by private companies. That’s what Musk suggests in his new book, The Power of a Penny, out Tuesday.
We’ve written about how Musk’s plan might actually help make the grid more reliable, especially since the private grid could be built and operated at a lower cost than the government grid. He believes that setting up a new, competitive national grid will reduce outages in large parts of the U.S.
But opponents of Musk’s proposal say it is too simplistic and the grid is already safe. They also say the U.S. grid was designed and built decades ago, and it doesn’t need significant changes.
So we asked four experts in the field, including Musk, to weigh in. Here’s what they said:
