AutoCAD was introduced on January 1, 1982 and was originally called AutoDraft to differentiate it from Draftsight (a drafting system from Aldus Corporation). On October 1, 1994, it was renamed to AutoCAD. Starting in the fall of 2012, AutoCAD introduced a new user interface, as the old one was criticized for its cumbersome user interface, lack of features, and poor performance.
The first implementation was by Peter F. Ricciardi. It was made available in December of 1982 in an internal testing version, and was released to customers and dealers on January 1, 1983. In 1984, Peter F. Ricciardi left Autodesk to work for Hire Engineers, a division of Human Kinetics, as their director of software development. Prior to this, Ricciardi wrote the AccuDraw PCD file format. He was the lead developer of the first version of AutoCAD for the IBM PC.
AutoCAD 1.0 had a learning curve that was greater than its predecessors (such as DraftSight and MicroStation). It was largely free of errors in its initial release, and had a great deal of function in its initial release, including DWG and WPG native rendering (and previous versions did not have these capabilities). It also had a trial mode to get customers to try it out to see if it was the right product for them. A few features were available in a "lite" mode, but could not be "unlocked" until the product was upgraded.
