The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning takes place ten years after the events of The Legend of Spyro, in which Sparx was turned into dark crystal and unleashed onto the world by the Corruptors. In A New Beginning, Spyro and his friends return to Solaire for the first time since the game. The game begins with Spyro waking up in a giant cavern full of various animals and villains. He realizes he is no longer wearing his Flame Crest, and that he is trapped, as he cannot make a single move or gesture. Spyro then awakens a snake that is familiar to him, revealing he is in the company of his three friends, Sparx, Crash Bandicoot and Tricky. They are then transported to a machine by Dr. Nefarious, which is a replica of the machine that took Spyro to the Netherworld, and they are returned to their world. After escaping from the machine, the player character must search for the last Crystal of Solaire and return it to a mystical Tree of Life, thus, saving the universe.
A New Beginning was well received by critics, with praise for its art design, catchy soundtrack, memorable characters, and gameplay, although some criticized its short length. The game was commercially successful, selling over one million copies worldwide. A remastered version for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One, developed by n-Space and published by Activision and Sony, was released on September 30, 2017.
