SORTXL handles large ASCII files more efficiently than SORT.EXE, and all sorts are available, including the number of devices available.
SORTXL uses a DOS-like sort table for each sort criteria, and also operates on 'collapsible' columns. These make it easy to sort file data without consuming excessive memory.
Sort criteria supported include date MM/DD/YYYY, float (double), hex, and octal. It is fast, stable, space-conserving, and self-regulating.
The sort table is registered at the C: drive. SORTXL does not require an FDD file. It reads the first text file of each data set.
SORTXL is self-regulating; a sort table is never removed.
SORTXL is memory-safe: it does not modify any existing files or directories.
SORTXL supports ~20,000 and 4GB files.
SORTXL is a DOS program compatible with any PC running DOS 3.3 or better. It can be run as a DOS 3.3 command processor.
SORTXL operates by 'collapsing' (merging) the columns with the same name into a single column. By default, all columns merge together, but this can be changed.
If less than two columns are specified, the first is assumed to be a header, and the next the actual data. The header may be left out with a blank line (to be used for the second column).
SORTXL supports ASCII, ANSI, EBCDIC, and other character sets.
SORTXL consists of ASCII text files, with a SORTXL header and a file of sorts.
