It is a small, free character picker/generator which allows you to pick a character from any font, choose between proportional and monospaced fonts and see a preview of what it's going to look like.
The character map displays different areas on the screen for editing and previewing the selected character. The character map has a variety of features:

The user can easily move the mouse to the character to be edited.
From the keyboard, the user can use the left mouse button to select the character or to pick an area from which to generate the character.
You can use the right button to select a font from which you can generate the character.
If the character is not generated, it will be marked by a red exclamation mark.
You can use the left mouse button to place a text cursor on a character.
You can hold down the left mouse button to move the cursor to the character from which you want to generate the character and click to generate the character.
You can use the right button to add a space to the character from which you want to generate the character.
You can hold down the left mouse button to move the cursor to a character to be edited and click to generate the character.
You can click in a rectangle area and select one or more characters to generate one or more rounded characters.
When generating a character, you can press Ctrl+C to copy the character to the clipboard and then paste the character into a text editor.
When you generate a character, you can double-click to select an area in which you want to copy the character or to move the character to the right until the window appears in which the whole character is shown.

Character map is a stand-alone Xmap program, designed to quickly and easily replace any character on a display screen for any operating system. It runs on Windows PCs, Macintosh PCs, Unix workstations and early releases of Digital Visions 'Win' for PC.
If you use an unusual keymap, you'll probably need to add your own characters. However, if you're lucky, you won't have to make any changes.
The program's main screen is divided into two parts.
The "left map" shows characters defined in the current character map. It consists of four horizontal bars separated by white spaces.
The "right map" shows a "pulldown menu" showing all entries defined in the current map.
To add a custom character, select the character to add from the pulldown menu and enter its position using the Up/Down Arrow buttons.
To delete a character, select the position of the character from the pulldown menu and press Delete.
To see any changes made to a character map, select it from the pulldown menu, then click the Refresh button.

Node icons can be moved by dragging, and they are automatically merged or divided as you drag, allowing you to rearrange your flowchart in different ways.
A New node icon can be inserted into your flowchart by pressing the space bar.
All nodes are "Editable", allowing you to modify their labels and description.
You can also rename your nodes and nodes can be copied and pasted to other positions.
You can even add comments about each node you draw.
You can draw your diagram as many times as you like on different screens and share it with other people.
You can export your flowchart to PDF, PNG, JPEG, BMP or SVG format, so you can easily share your work with others.
You can also add a clock to your diagram to make it appear more professional.
