Summary
Dorothy, known as Dot, is a normal middle-class girl living in Fairbanks, Alaska. One day, she tells her parents that she wants to move to Hawaii, to live with an aunt of her deceased older sister. Her parents agree, and when they are on a business trip, Dot boards a train to Hawaii. At the train station, however, a nun and several teenage girls she had met in a chapel at her convent in Fairbanks are waiting for her. When they see Dot's small suitcase, they argue over whether she is allowed to travel alone without a guardian. Meanwhile, a railroad employee has been spying on Dot, so when he spots her on the train, he plans to alert her parents. Meanwhile, in Hawaii, Dot meets her aunt and her aunt's friend. During a day of shopping, Dot goes to a store to find a special book. There she meets a nice lady and her friend and becomes friends with her, the friend gives her the book. When they get to their destination, the lady's husband tries to get in the way of Dot, but the husband and the friend grab Dot and take her to their house. At their home, the husband and the friend force Dot to watch a movie with them, and when she doesn't want to, they begin to choke her. They then take Dot to their bedroom and they both begin to choke her. The friend gets out a knife and is about to kill Dot, but Dorothy lets her friend's friend know that the girl is not Dot. Dot runs away. When she finds an old hotel, she goes there, and she wakes up in the morning, so she goes to the docks and makes her way to the bus that goes to the airport. As she takes a bus, she meets a man and he begins to talk to her and so she gets out at the next stop and runs off.
After this part of the story, the narrative becomes unclear. The characters in the narrative appear to be alive and well, but no updates are made on the plot. It is implied that it is decades after the events of the story.
Criticisms of the story
Critics of the story say that the story is incoherent, full of plot holes, and that the "characters" are not consistent. The story uses a number of story tropes, as described by David Herman:
