EYFS
What a busy week we have had in EYFS as the children have been decorating their classroom door for the Christmas door competition which is on the theme of Father Christmas and his helpers. In Literacy, the Nursery children have been learning about the "o" and "v" sounds while the Reception children have been learning consonant vowel consonant words and completed a CVC Word and Picture Matching activity for the letter "a." Both groups of children have begun reading books from the Jolly Phonics Readers collection. These books have been written with a carefully controlled vocabulary and are specifically designed for children who are learning to read and write using the internationally acclaimed Jolly Phonics reading programme. An exciting development concerning the Reception aged children is the fact that they have started a CVC word activity booklet 😊.
During choosing time, many of the children love to play with Lego making towers and flat buildings. See the picture above.
In Storytime, Miss Aida read a super book called "Lost in the Snow" which is an uplifting story about a little puppy who loses his way in a snowstorm.
This week in Mathematics, the children in both Nursery and Reception began learning about things which are bigger and smaller and things which are taller and shorter. In Nursery, they also continued tracing and copying numbers 1 to 10, while in Reception numbers from 20 to 30. Both groups of children have been learning about measure and now have more understanding of the terms and the differences as mentioned in last week's newsletter.
In Understanding the World this week, the children in both EYFS groups looked at how children in Russia celebrate Christmas. Christmas in Russia is normally celebrated on January 7th (only a few Catholics might celebrate it on the 25th December). The date is different because the Russian Orthodox Church uses the old 'Julian' calendar for religious celebration days. 
On Friday, the children had a fabulous day at the Christmas Bazaar where they bought and sold lots of Christmas goodies. For the Bazaar the children helped make some unpainted Christmas tree decorations which they sold on their stall.
