Profiles in Courage Essay Assignment

As part of my 11th Grade Honors Government & Economics class, students read the 1957 Pulitzer-Prize winning book Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy. Kennedy was inspired to write this book after reading American journalist and historian Herbert Agar's book The Price of Union about Senator John Quincy Adam and wrote the book while bedridden during 1954 and 1955, recovering from back surgery, with the help of researchers from the Library of Congress. Within its pages, Kennedy wanted to write about acts of bravery by American political leaders in the face of great challenges, focusing on eight (8) senators who defied the opinions of their party and constituents to do what they felt was right, sometimes suffering severe criticism and losses in popularity because of their actions. Students then composed a final essay that was based around the requirements of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library's Profiles in Courage Essay Contest. Some of there creations are posted below:
