The legend of Jim Morrison was born in April 1953, the son of a grocer and a telephone operator. He grew up in the sunny town of Piedmont, in San Diego County, where he was studying English at the time. On the rocks, he joined various bands, mainly of the rock and roll type. By the time he was in his teens, he had become a half-time singer and half-time poet. In his autobiography, he describes the strange, entirely novel, almost mystical sensation of singing with the aid of marijuana. "The range of my mind" is how he summed it up. After school, he worked in a garage to support his family and pursued an artistic life. In the mid-sixties, he went to New York and became a part of the Lower East Side milieu. He supported himself through night club jobs, writing poetry and songs, and surfing the hippy-circles. The thing that seemed to him most important at that time was art.
