In this chapter, you learn how to create or crop images, add images and text to a canvas, do basic image retouching, as well as re- or retouch images.
Creating an image
Photoshop is used to create raster images, or images made up of dots, pixels, or pixels (for color pixels). Raster images are created using color or gray scale images as templates. You can choose from a variety of sizes, shapes, and densities of pixels to create a variety of unique images.
Creating a new image in Photoshop is extremely simple and is pretty much done when you start the program. When you open Photoshop, you see the Welcome Screen shown in Figure 6-1. Here you have the option of choosing a preset image from the Presets Menu, which can be found on the right side of the screen. On the left side of the screen are the following options:
• File open > New: Open a new image.
• File open > Open: Open an existing document in Photoshop.
• File open > Open in new window: Open an existing document in a new browser window.
• File open > Browse. Open an existing file in Photoshop.
• File open > Use as source: Use the currently open image as a template for a new image.

If you don't open a file, you see the following screen:
Photoshop has an Image window, shown in Figure 6-2, where you can easily create raster images. To start working on an image, click the Edit icon on the menu bar (shown in the margin). This opens the image window so you can start manipulating your image.
  The Preview window (shown in the margin) shows your image in a variety of ways:
• The layers palette enables you to add and remove color and gray layers, move them up and down the stack, and add new layers. The color and gray scales are the same inside each layer: the color of each pixel is determined by the color of the layer it's on.

What is Photoshop?
