1950年6月25日凌晨4时，在得到斯大林的同意之后，朝鲜内阁首相金日成下令军队越过三八线，发动了对韩国措手不及的入侵，韩国军队节节败退，就在金日成志得意满之时，美国总统哈里·S·杜鲁门命令驻扎在日本的美国远东空军协助韩国作战，将朝鲜人民军击溃，金日成向中华人民共和国求援，中华人民共和国派出中国人民志愿军参战，中国人民志愿军和美国军队在朝鲜长津湖地区交战，中国人民志愿军第9兵团把美国军队1个多师分割包围，歼灭1.3万余美军士兵。

2020年2月，《长津湖》宣布开机，原定导演刘伟强调动到《中国医生》，陈凯歌、徐克、林超贤接棒。2020年10月25日，片方在北京市举行开机仪式。[3]12月14日，该片正式开始拍摄。[4]2021年5月25日，片方宣布杀青。[5]
