Screenshots in modern GUI Windows are made by one of two APIs:
GDI
The Windows image grabber uses the GDI graphics API.  This is the legacy API.  If you have a Windows XP or later machine, chances are good that if you ask it to take a screenshot it will use the GDI API.  You'll probably have to tell it to use the GDI API explicitly (see snip).
If you have a Windows 98-era machine, or a Windows 2000 machine that was installed with a "faster" graphics mode, a screenshot might use the faster but deprecated Windows GDI API.  You can find out what version your machine is running by inspecting the output of gdiinfo.exe, and you can probably correct the problem by running gdi32.dll /use.  If you need to use the legacy API, the GDI32 API is recommended over the GDI32.dll, but there are known problems with it.
Direct2D
Direct2D is the Windows image grabber for Windows Vista and later.  It's what is supposed to make screenshots in the Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 versions of the OS.  Most Windows 7 or earlier machines should have Direct2D.
To make a screenshot using Direct2D, call the CaptureScreenToD2D function.  Do so as soon as you need to make the screenshot, as the screenshot will be made asynchronously and will not be available when the function returns.
To make a screenshot in the legacy Windows GDI API (Windows XP or later), first determine if you are using the legacy GDI API, and then call the GetSystemMetrics API.  Do so as soon as you need to make the screenshot, and then call the ScanDib or another appropriate GDI API to save it to a BMP file.
