History
1970s and 1980s
Autodesk was founded in 1970. In 1977, Scott Mitchener and Dan Case founded Autodesk. Case went on to become the company’s president and CEO, and Mitchener became the company’s vice president of engineering.
The company began selling software in 1979. In 1982, Autodesk released AutoCAD, a product for architectural and engineering professionals. In 1994, Autodesk acquired the software company ComputerCraft, which included Autodesk Mechanical and Autodesk Inventor. In 1999, Autodesk acquired the software company Fax Systems. In 2001, Autodesk acquired the vector graphic software company PTC, and then the vector graphics software company Vortex.
In 2008, the company’s shareholders received a total of $8.10 per share of Autodesk, equal to $1.17 per share of common stock and $0.60 per share of preferred stock.
