HHSim is a freeware simulation program of the HH (Hodgkin-Huxley) model of the nerve cell membrane in the ventricular system. Developed by Edward Fridlyand, HHSim is based on the program written by the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. It uses the normalized equations of Hodgkin and Huxley for sodium, potassium, and chloride ionic channels, with three types of sodium and potassium channels (fast, medium and slow). The current in the nerve cell membrane is calculated using the Eyring model and can be subjected to various forms of digital stimulation.
It offers a fine-grained and detailed mode of generating spikes in the membrane that are smoothed and filtered using a variety of parameters. Moreover, HHSim has several neural simulation options that include the points used to build up the stimulation signal, such as stimulus amplitude, frequency and number of pulses per second.
It can run under Windows XP/ Vista/ Windows 7 and there are no installation limitations.
Installation:
Simply download the zip file from HHSim.org and extract it to any directory.
To run the application, double-click on the executable. HHSim.exe
When the program opens, you can click on the "New graph" button located on the bottom left corner of the window to start the simulation.
For each simulation, you can modify the ionic concentrations of the membrane (Na+, K+ or Cl-), by sliding the "New graph" upward or downward, or increase or decrease them by clicking on the respective buttons. The additional options for graph settings include: increase/ decrease the top limits, increase/decrease the bottom limits, and change the window size.
To evaluate the simulation results, you can use the View the Results window. Click on the simulated graph and select the View the Results option.
The resulting graph is then displayed in the graph window.

This chapter deals with the concept of a **neuronal membrane**, that represents the boundary between a cell that is taking part in an excitatory behavior and the extracellular fluid environment. The **action potential** is defined as an excitatory event taking place inside the cell that causes an extensive depolarization and an additional cytosolic calcium influx, which leads to an evolution in the cell.
