Adobe and other image-editing programs such as the free GIMP (www.gimp.org) are continually creating new tools and features that make this software even better than it already is.
Importing a photo into Photoshop
Start by importing a photo into Photoshop. After importing a photo into Photoshop, you need to set it up before you begin to edit. To import a photo, follow these steps:
1. Start Photoshop and click Image⇒Import.
The Import dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 7-1.
2. In the Import dialog box, navigate to your photo file and click Open to import it.
You can select multiple files or drag and drop files onto the Import button. You may also use File⇒Open to import a selected file.

Choosing a file format
When choosing the file type to import, you have two options:
  Photoshop can import multiple file formats. Choose a file type that's appropriate for the content you want to add to your document. For example, if you're adding an image, select a format that's suitable for your intended use. For example, your use may require that your file is a layered PSD file, TIFF, or JPEG.
  The Import dialog box displays a list of the formats supported by Photoshop. As you import, you may notice that the list updates to reflect your choice.
However, you may need to convert the type to a format that's accepted by the application before you can use it in Photoshop. You can convert your files in Photoshop using the commands discussed in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3.
  You may need to create an image that uses the correct color mode to display the final document in Photoshop. For example, you can use a RGB image when you intend to use the colors in a print, but you can convert that RGB image into a CMYK image for most types of printing.
Creating a new document or loading an existing image
After you import your photo, you need to decide whether to create a new document or open an existing one. In general, you should create new documents for any type of work you plan to do in Photoshop. You can load an image into a new document if you want to edit it or create a new image.

Let’s go over the basic steps to edit and create graphics in Photoshop Elements.
Step 1: Create an Image
You can either import a new image or create a new image in Photoshop Elements.
First, drag and drop your image onto the canvas and create a new document. You can also copy an image from your computer’s file system or move an image to the top of the canvas.
A new document opens. You can always change the size of the canvas by resizing the document or by changing the proportion of the document.

You can change the Document size in the top right of the window. The Document Size affects the page size when printing.
You can change the canvas size by dragging a corner of the canvas. You can also resize the image with the resize tool.

Let’s say you want to change the size of the canvas to be twice as large as the original file.
Drag the canvas twice as large on the top and then double-click the canvas.
The canvas is twice the size of the original document.
You can also set the canvas size directly using the proportion tool on the toolbar.

If you want to create a new image on the canvas, click the New button on the tools bar. The image size is directly controlled by setting the resolution.
You can import a new image in the My Images folder. Simply click the Choose File… icon on the top menu of the file list.

If the image you want to import isn’t located in the My Images folder, you can find it in the file system.
To locate the location of the new image, open the Finder and locate the file using the Go to folder… command. Click the Select File… button on the Go to folder command to open the file dialog.
