Flying is a lot like business, said Henry Ford, the founder of the Ford Motor Company. One doesn’t go to work by having one’s legs carried by a rubber band.
So it may be understandable that a luxury airline is the company of choice for the launch of a regional carrier in the United States.
JetBlue, the New York-based airline that made its mark with low fares and a low-key travel experience, is being relaunched in the city that gave birth to the company with the aim of expanding its presence in the Northeast.
The new airline, called Silver Airways, will begin service in New York on Oct. 1 from John F. Kennedy International Airport. It is expected to serve Washington, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New Jersey. The airline will compete with other regional carriers, like American, Frontier and JetBlue itself.
Silver will fly out of Kennedy on flights to airports in the Northeast, where the airline will compete with JetBlue and American Airlines. In addition to those airlines, Silver is expected to compete with regional carriers, like Allegiant, Envoy Air and Sun Country.
Silver is following a pattern that started years ago. JetBlue struggled in the early 2000s, when it grew by joining major carriers like Delta, American and Continental. The carrier was then sold to the British investment group Tiger Airlines for $1.6 billion.
“We believe this new approach will allow us to truly succeed by staying true to our customers’ needs,” the company’s CEO, David Barger, said in a statement. “We expect to face much more fierce competition than we did as JetBlue. But we believe we are better positioned to be successful against them.”
Silver has raised $115 million from a group of shareholders that include Silverstein Properties, the developer of the Manhattan condominiums and hotels that bear the same name as the airline; Cantor Fitzgerald, an investment bank; and George Osborne, a private investor.
