  * _Adobe Photoshop Elements_ is an offline version of Photoshop that enables you to create and edit an image without the need for a computer.
I typically use Photoshop Elements because it is less expensive than Photoshop. If your budget is tight, however, then Photoshop is the way to go.
## Adobe Lightroom
_Lightroom_, the photo editing program from Adobe, is not exactly a replacement for Photoshop, but it is a very capable program in its own right. It features an easy to use interface and supports RAW images.
As you can see in Figure 10-2, Lightroom supports multiple photos, but it's not a full-featured editing program like Photoshop.

The interface allows you to control the following aspects of Lightroom:
  * **Photo and image management** : You can organize photos, tag them, and even create albums in Lightroom. You can use the program to create and edit individual photos, or you can use it as a whole-album editor. Lightroom also supports slideshow creation and playback.
  * **Exposure and color** : You can edit exposure, lighten or darken an image, increase or decrease color saturation, use different retouching tools, and so on.
  * **Layers** : You can use the photo's layers to insert or delete elements from an image, copy elements between layers, and remove unwanted elements.
You can also apply various effects to an image, such as vignetting, lens distortion, and simulated wrinkles. The program even offers a variety of filters and treatments to change the way you look at an image. Figure 10-3 shows an image adjusted in Lightroom.

The following are some of the reasons I think Lightroom is an effective editing tool:
  * **Lightroom's interface is easy to use.** You can adjust the exposure, saturation, and color balance of an image with sliders instead of choosing specific options with checkboxes and buttons. So for example, rather than

All of the features of Elements are accessible with a single click. From editing basic tasks to advanced photo editing, the interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. Elements makes it easy to prepare photos for the web or the desktop, convert photos to different formats, create new graphics and add your special effects.
The downside is the lack of some features, including the ability to rotate, crop, stack and align a series of photos.
If you prefer to work with the more advanced and feature-rich Photoshop, then this is a great and flexible alternative.
However, if you want to get things done fast and you know what you want to do with Elements, then check out some of the features in this post.
Basic Photoshop Element features for photographers
Although it is designed for non-photographers, Elements is great for photographers for a few reasons.
Editing photos in Photoshop Elements is much easier.
Elements doesn’t have a steep learning curve and you can easily transfer your skills to the desktop version.
The focus of Elements is to help you with the basics and get you working, not to be a complicated tool.
It is less intimidating than Photoshop.
If you have spent a lot of time learning complex tools in Photoshop, the self-explanatory design of Elements might be a surprise, and you might find yourself learning a bit more.
The new user interface makes the app easy to pick up.
Elements makes editing photos easy, as opposed to Photoshop where most actions will require you to navigate through menus and toolbars.
However, sometimes the actions will look overwhelming to a new user.
With Elements, most actions are accessible with a simple click, meaning that you can easily perform most photo edits or create new graphics.
Elements allows you to preview your photos before you actually save them.
Elements doesn’t have the infamous “are you sure” message that many a Photoshop user has faced.
If you change your mind, you can simply click “No”.
However, if you wish to edit your photo, you need to click “Yes” to save.
It is great that the app doesn’t automatically adjust your photos.
