The game was released in Japan on April 30, 2006, in North America on May 4, 2006, and in Europe on July 19, 2006. The player takes the role of a person who travels to different places and fights against other people using cards.
Gameplay
In the game, players are given a docket of 20 hand-drawn cards with a "formula", the ability to create monsters with them, and several monster keywords. These keywords are Lightning, Void, Fusion, and Synchro. The game is composed of an engine that produces these cards, and an interface for gameplay.  For gameplay, players pick a card in their hand and place it face down on the card reader. If the card has the Fusion, Synchro, or Void keyword, it will be played face down. If the card has the Lightning keyword, it will be played face up. The player then plays the card face up on the card reader. This draws a card from the engine, along with a 5 card hand worth of card draws. Once the draw deck is depleted, the player must discard two cards from their hand. Once all five cards have been played, the game ends and players add up their points.
Plot
In 2006, an old man in the Japanese countryside has a nightmare of someone named Lightning coming to take his wife and son away, then tries to warn people about it. In the subsequent story, people are seen playing the game "Duelist Link" with their own families, and the game is used as a method to teach children to fight evil. The player takes on the role of a person with the same name as the old man's son who is traveling to different places in the world to defeat evil. In each place, players meet someone who plays the game, and becomes their ally. At the end of the game, the player and all their allies defeat the main antagonist, and escape in a black car together, with the protagonist and his allies taking turns driving.
Card types
The card types in the game include Link Monsters, Monster-Type-Effect Monsters, Physical Monsters, Spell/Trap Cards, Trap/Effect Cards, and Fusion Monsters. Unlike many other TCGs, in which cards usually are presented in pairs, each card in Duelist Link has a single name, thus this game is known as a single-name card game.
