It has been described as a ‘disaster’, a ‘nightmare’ and ‘terrible’ and to be honest I’m quite surprised that it is still being rolled out.
But I’m not surprised that it is.
I’m not surprised it is rolled out in the first place. I’m not surprised it is so difficult to achieve savings, I’m not surprised the caseloads are so high and I’m not surprised it is complicated, costly and bureaucratic. I’m not surprised that it has been rolled out by a government which is unable to cope with anything other than the most expensive and controversial solutions.
But is it, as some have claimed, a failure?
In some ways it is, of course it’s always going to be a disaster because it is so complicated and difficult to deliver. But it is not a failure in the way that No to PR has been a failure.
Yes it is a failure if you want to call it that but it’s a failure in the same way as is any government programme or policy or scheme or programme or new initiative or idea rolled out by government.
There are some who will say that it is a total and utter failure and that it is a disaster for those who have to live through it. Those who are still coming to terms with the debacle that is Universal Credit and they’re just not sure that they can survive it.
And there are others who will say that it has been a total and utter success and it’s about time that the system was rolled out because it’s been over two decades since the Tories decided to roll it out.
But what is it?
To say the universal credit is a ‘failure’ is to suggest that it is not working. It is not working in the way it was intended to work.
It was not meant to provide people with an income stream. It was not intended to save money. It was not intended to work as an economic stimulus. It was not intended to help people live in an autonomous way.
