The state of knowledge in American social and economic history from the Seventeenth Century until the present is remarkable. It is as solid and satisfying as any of the other disciplines that compose what historians call the social sciences. In this century the study of the American past has become not only an important contribution to the life of the nation but a definite part of the educational curriculum in colleges and universities.
Its popularity rests upon many factors. For the first time a critical knowledge of the past is possible and accessible to the general public. Because of the extensive records and broad scope of material available, American social history has something to say on a number of other topics, especially on the intellectual and political history of the United States. Because of its full documentation, American social history offers the scholar an opportunity to test his ideas against the facts of the past as well as to compare past and present society. For a broad general audience, social history is a quick and easy introduction to the study of American culture.
But the development of American social history has been uneven. It began with men of the social reform movement. They were primarily historians of religion and the life of the poor. They were concerned with the social problems of the city and the agrarian South. As the new field developed, a number of important names appear on the scene: David Riesman, William Appleton Williams, John Cotton Dana, Samuel E. Morison. There were men of the university. The most notable of these was Frank W. Blackmar, who began with a study of the settlement of New England. A number of other professors, like Norman B. Stillman and Charles A. Beard, produced important works. But it is not until the sixties and seventies of this century that the field attained a prominence.
The growth of the field was related to two factors: the appearance of historians trained to use primary sources; the growth of the _Register of the American Historical Association._ In the sixties the association recognized the importance of the social sciences and in 1968 made them one of its four major divisions. In this decade a number of historians, whose articles had appeared in the _Register_, received the association's N.E.A. Grant. In the seventies,
