CACTI is a Windows application that is able to encode the audio data of motivational interviews. It’s a java-based application that is used for analyzing motivational interviews. It consists of three main functions, namely encoding, parsing, and rating.

The encoding function helps you to record your conversation with a patient on the PC. After this, the tool provides with a list of audio files and a select button that lets you open the pre-selected audio file. As you know, the default file extension is “wav”.
The coding functions help you to assign codes to all behavioral responses from a given audio file in a sequential order. This is helpful for analyzing and identifying both the patient’s and your session’s behavioral responses.
The rating function helps you to distribute the coding functions in accordance to a predefined style. You can also provide with a Likert-type rating for a specific behavioral response.

I first heard about this software from julien Tanguy on his blog, the tiqui code. I decided to download the trial version to assess the feasibility of doing coding using a tool without coding expertise. The software is easy to use and in addition, this trial version allows you to test some of the audio files for free.
I therefore decided to use it to code the audio files of a patient (a coworker of mine) and the results (that are also available in the free trial version) were extremely positive: easy to learn, and that does not disappoint. I can confirm the quality of the service received from Tavi.
Actually, the master suite is comprehensive and allows you to start from scratch: from you login/password to the many other forms that can be used to capture audio files in the variety of formats that can be considered including.mp3, AAC, AAC+ and MP3. The analysis features, therefore, are easily added on.
Great strength is that Tavi allows you to control the way in which files are imported from the main folder. We have no option but to be satisfied: Tavi is the ideal environment to document the motivational interviews you have coded and saves all of the documentation in various formats, either as easy-to-handle files or as electronic notes.
What I particularly liked is the ability to select the type of coding to be performed: to note the beginning of each exchange, the end of each exchange, the begin of each sequence of responses, the end of each sequence of responses. I have not yet found any other software offering such a wide range of function.
The user interface is very simple and if you know coding, it is not difficult to use, which is essential when you look for a software that you will document a motivational interview yourself. The software is accessible and very user-friendly
