Shaolin Soccer was produced by the Hong Kong television station TVB and was directed by David Lai. The first episode of Shaolin Soccer aired in Hong Kong on January 10, 1996 and was also broadcast in Taiwan on April 1, 1996.
Plot
The wealthy and arrogant chairman of the Shaolin Soccer Club is forced to resign following his failure to bring in enough money to cover the club's debts. The club is declared bankrupt, and its prestigious soccer team disbanded. To help her father, Tan's younger sister, and also her brother, Danny, finds the Shaolin Soccer Club in trouble and agrees to fund the club with her inheritance money. Tan refuses to accept help from any outsiders and begins training the team's players to return to their old skill levels. A novice, he asks the former members of the soccer team to return.
Wong Lai-Sing, the former captain of the team, now works as a security guard, and has a wife and two children. He tries to convince the players to return to the old club, but is ignored. The players, who have been told that the club has been declared bankrupt, refuse to return, as they have heard about the player who left the club as a result of a defeat and was not paid back for his debt to the club.
Siu Wai-Yiu, a professional boxer, now tries to persuade Lai-Sing to return to the club. He goes as far as to suggest that the players will win a championship. As a result, several of the players, including the team captain, agree to return. However, when they tell their leader they will return, his pride gets the better of him. He tells them he will no longer support them. The players end up looking for another club, but no one will hire them.
After the players leave, the vice-chairman of the club, a gambler who often bet on soccer games, offers to back them in a match against the team from a rich man's club. The club's chances of winning the match become greater when the rich man's team is eliminated early in the match. Although they are a losing team, they win when they make a late goal. A woman whom Lai-Sing had once been in love with watches the game. She tells him that she did not actually love him, but only wanted to help his sister. Lai-Sing forgives her.
