I want to get the following:

Where ddddddddd is the combination of all letters from these lines.
I tried this:
 awk 'NR>1 {print substr($0,1,5)}'
But it didn't return me what i want.

Doing it in bash
awk '{a=a substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file
This prints only the first 5 characters of the line, so the combined length is 6 characters (the first one plus the other 5).
If you want the longest line in the input file, do:
awk '{a=a substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file | sort -n
If you want to omit the first line and sort numerically by total length, do:
awk '{a=a substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file | sort -n | cut -d''-f2
The main problem with your AWK script is that you do not assign a variable a so you are always printing the result of substr($0,1,5). When awk prints a value, it always print it with an ORS (an output record separator). 
The easiest way to fix that is by adding an assignment before printing:
awk '{a=a substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file
In bash, this is 
awk 'NR>1 {a=a substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file

awk '{a=substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file
Also, you should quote your variables like awk '{a=substr($0,1,5) ORS $0} END {print a}' file. In general, always quote your variables (a more readable way to do it is using vars='...' function call as demonstrated in the answer by @steve harris below).
