This study aimed to compare the geometric quality of impressions obtained using the successor to the first-generation intra-oral scanner, the contemporary direct/digital scanner, and the conventional scanner. The geometric quality of impressions were compared using a calibrated scanner (Nikon, Tokyo, Japan) and a contact image system (Scanora, Soredex, Finland). Thirty impressions of 4 types of acrylic molds were taken with both intra-oral scanners and conventional scanner at 2 working distances (4.4 mm and 6.3 mm). The acquired data were then imported into Dental Wingshape (DWS) software. Both the widths and heights of each mold were measured, and differences in all dimensions were calculated. The mean values of the widths and heights of the molds were 2.9±0.4 mm and 1.8±0.3 mm for conventional scanner, 2.7±0.4 mm and 1.8±0.3 mm for intra-oral scanner I, and 2.6±0.3 mm and 1.8±0.3 mm for intra-oral scanner II, respectively. The geometric quality was comparable between the direct/digital and conventional scanners. Both scanners showed no significant difference between the 4 working distances. The conventional scanner and the contemporary direct/digital scanner showed acceptable and comparable geometric quality. The results indicated that the contemporary direct/digital scanner may be clinically acceptable for impression making, if the appropriate impression protocols are followed.The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released a notice soliciting an open source development project to create tools to detect “malicious cyber activities” aimed at election infrastructure.
