After working in the government, Arthur Handson set up on his own account as an architect in 1890. In 1892 he moved to Marylebone, London, to practice at the firm of Watkinson and Handson.
The company evolved into Watkinson Handson during the First World War. During the Second World War the company changed its name to Handson & Watkinson and became Handson & MacLennan. After the war the business became Handson & MacLean.
Design technology has been at the heart of the company since its founding.
History
Arthur Handson established Handson & Co in 1880 on Lower Regent Street in London as a business to provide architectural services. As well as architecture he became involved in the design of many buildings and specialised in the design of churches. His firm carried out the design of many buildings in England and Ireland including the Methodist Central Hall (1899), London Coliseum (1900), Blairs School (1901), the Kentmere Court of the Fife House of the Scottish Church College (1902), Martyrs’ Memorial Church (1903), the Old School (1904), the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (1905), the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (1906), St Stephen's Methodist Church (1907), the Queen's Hall (1909) and St Mary's Cathedral, Belfast (1914).
In 1889 Arthur Handson moved to 6, Devonshire Square, Marylebone, London, as an independent architect. He started to practice from an office of his own and set up Watkinson and Handson in 1892. The name Watkinson Handson was officially registered as a company name in 1901 and the firm was established as an independent company. The name was changed to Watkinson Handson in the first years of the twentieth century.
During the First World War the company changed its name to Handson & Watkinson. After the war the business became Handson & MacLennan.
The company moved to 1 Gloucester Place, Berkeley Square, London in 1922.
The firm entered a large number of building projects in Great Britain and Ireland during the interwar years. The company started a new office in Watford and an expansion was made in Ireland. In 1930 the company moved to a new headquarters at Wandsworth Bridge Road in London. During the Second World War the company moved to Balfields House in Edinburgh.
