👀 Look What We're Learning

📚 Reading
Our unit focus in reading will be getting to know characters in our fiction stories, learning about making predictions, and retelling information that maintains order. Students will discuss character traits and identify character feelings. Finally, the focus will shift from character study to identifying the theme and what the character, and we the reader, can learn from our stories. Additionally, students will be using a the program “i-Ready” this year instead of Istation.

📋 Phonics & Spelling
We will be using Benchmark Phonics this year. We will start by reviewing short vowels, long a (a_e, ai, ay, a) long o (o_e, oa,
ow, o) and long u. (u_e, ue, ew, u).

📝 Writing
During writers workshop, students will focus on generating ideas about true stories from their lives. They will learn to tell their stories bit by bit and focus on the small moments, rather than day long events. Also, children will practice their skills of editing and revising while thinking about an audience for their writing.

🔢 Math
This month we are reviewing place value; we are reviewing different ways we can write numbers and will also practice comparing and ordering numbers. 🌏 Social Studies
During the first nine weeks, third graders will understand that responsible citizens demonstrate the characteristics of good citizenship and take an active role in their community. Citizens can make community changes by helping to serve the common good.

⚗️ Science
This month we are learning all about matter! Students will learn about solids, liquids, and gasses. Click here for the explanation of this unit and activities you can do at home to help your student.
