“Wings” is the first single and title track of the debut studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Delta Goodrem. The song was released on 23 June 2005 and is written by Goodrem herself. The song’s title refers to her desire to be a ‘winged’ star. Goodrem first made the song available to download from her official website on 13 June 2005, with the music video for the single following the next day.
“Wings” reached No. 26 in New Zealand and No. 24 in Australia, becoming Goodrem’s highest charting solo single, surpassing the No. 34 peak of her debut single, “Innocence”. An acoustic version of the single was released as a limited edition bonus track in certain countries, due to Goodrem receiving widespread critical praise from radio stations for its softer sounds. This version of the song was released in several countries, including the United States, Japan, Canada and Australia.
“Wings” is Delta Goodrem’s only solo single to date, which was released on Universal/Marillion. Prior to the release of the single, a demo version of the song was featured on Goodrem’s 2002 debut album, Innocent Eyes. This version of the song was released on the Marillion / Universal album “Wings”, and was recorded with the band The Answering Machine. The song was also performed live on Goodrem’s self-titled debut album and subsequent singles “Innocence” and “Lost Without You”.
“Wings” was written by Goodrem herself, as was her next single “Lost Without You”, which was released shortly after “Wings”. The song was also the fourth track recorded for the album, and was followed by “Gravity”.
