In the early 1980s, architects and engineers used networked personal computers (PCs) for a variety of applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and CAD systems. However, CAD was still a specialized business, carried out on mainframe and minicomputers. Many firms avoided CAD because of the cost, complexity, and time required to set up, administer, and maintain a CAD system. However, in 1982, Autodesk created a new CAD system called a personal computer-aided design (PC-aided) program. This new type of program required less staff, could be installed on a single desktop computer, and enabled a user to connect directly to the network. The result was a simple, economical CAD system that could be installed on a single PC.

The new PC-aided system consisted of four major elements. (1) The Autodesk AutoCAD program (formerly called AutoCAD Personal Workstation) ran on the user's PC. (2) AutoCAD ran on the PC and was controlled by a mouse or keyboard. (3) The software system was a network, enabling users to draw together on a shared image. (4) At Autodesk, the program was used with a collection of additional software tools.
AutoCAD was developed by a team of software engineers and designers at Autodesk, the creators of the first PC-aided CAD system. They worked on AutoCAD over a two-year period. The first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982 as a "personal workstation" on a standalone desktop computer that ran the DOS operating system. AutoCAD, with the other software tools of the PC-aided system, was a stand-alone system. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available as a mobile and web app.
The AutoCAD program was originally designed for use on a standalone desktop computer. In 1984, Autodesk began to distribute AutoCAD on microcomputers running the Microsoft DOS operating system. The goal was to provide users with a better, more affordable product that was easier to install and maintain.

AutoCAD uses its own internal programming language, called AutoLISP. AutoLISP is similar to LISP.
In AutoCAD LT, AutoLISP is also used for scripting and command-line automation.
AutoLISP is supported by the Visual LISP programming language and by Delphi. Visual LISP programming also allows creating and manipulating AutoLISP. The visual development environment enables fast development and debugging of AutoLISP code. AutoLISP is the default programming language of AutoCAD 2010 and later, but AutoCAD LT users can access AutoLISP through the AutoCAD LT scripting feature.
