Someone in Hollywood wants a remake of 1991's 'Hot Fuzz,' but there's only one way to go about it. What's the plan?
That question is at the heart of new comedy 'Hot Fuzz.' The movie -- which centers on a small town in England that is infiltrated by a pair of rogue British police officers who save the local populace from chaos -- is directed by Edgar Wright, who also made cult comedy 'Shaun of the Dead' (2004) and cult fantasy 'Hot Fuzz' (2007).
On the most basic level, the new film differs from the original in three key ways: It is written and directed by a man, instead of a woman; it follows a different class of protagonist; and it features a different leading lady (Jennifer Love Hewitt plays the iconic Inspector Carmody, and 'Walking Tall' star Hilary Swank plays the new character, Chief Superintendent Rose Tyler).
What Wright is up to, however, goes far beyond these three simple changes. At an early press conference, the British director -- who has an increasingly distinctive comedic style after developing his unique style in 'Shaun of the Dead' -- spoke with me about the new film, which is set to open in theatres on June 25.
'Hot Fuzz' centers on a small British town where twin brothers Shaun and Danny (Martin Freeman) are the lead police officers. One night, they are called into action to deal with an unruly crowd of kids who are calling for the riot act. A band of idiots takes over the town center, terrifying the local residents. The teenagers -- fueled by drink and drugs -- try to put a hurtin' on the police officers, who are still reeling from having been played off against each other in the last movie. The two brothers suddenly find themselves on the verge of making a life-or-death decision that will ultimately shape both of their careers.
That sounds like a simple premise for a comedy, and it is. But you could argue that it's a lot to put into a movie -- and Wright isn't shy about admitting that ' 3125841983
