Tamil scholar Annamalai University was the first to be established in 1930 by the then Sir C.P. Ramaswami Iyer, the then Vice Chancellor of the university, which was rechristened as Annamalai University in 1965. It was originally founded as the Annamalai College in 1917 by Tamil scholar Adarraiya Chozhaachar Thevar who was the disciple of the famous Mararathnammozhuda Inayatyar. Annamalai University was named after Annamalai Ammal, the  holy daughter of St. Valmiki and a disciple of Adarraiya Chozhaachar Thevar, who was consecrated as the kulathungam (blessed by god) by the famous saint Manickambaram Sathyavagiswarar in the 8th century. The late eminent scholar Sir. V. Sounderraj, the first education minister of the state of Tamil Nadu was from the Annamalai family.
While he was Minister of Education, the well-known scholar Sir. V. Sounderraj stated: " It was the brain child of my grandfather Adarraiya Chozhaachar Thevar who dreamt of a college for the education of the students belonging to the Tamil race. He donated land for the college and made it available for the education of the children of farmers and tradesmen. The college was named after Annamalai Ammal, who was the daughter of Adarraiya Chozhaachar Thevar". Tamil Nadu's first Engineering college – College of Engineering was also established at the same place (since 1934) by Sir. V. Sounderraj. The Annamalai University Library, the largest in Asia and second largest in India was established in 1965 and the first ever School of Management was founded in 1985.
