AutoCAD [Latest 2022]
Over the years, AutoCAD has evolved to cover an increasingly broad range of tasks. It is now used for engineering and architectural design, mechanical drafting, surface modeling, geometrical engineering, graphics and Web design, computer aided manufacturing, and engineering, architectural, and manufacturing technical communication. It is also used for planning and approval processes. More recently, the application's functionality has expanded to cover the more specific areas of architectural design, land surveying, civil engineering, mining, and petroleum engineering.
History
AutoCAD started out in 1982 as a tool for engineers, architects, and draftsmen to draw and edit the basic geometric shapes of their design using a mouse.
The first version of AutoCAD was designed by architect Michael Graves (1927-2004) and Kevin Roche (1926-2010). Graves was a draftsman at Rice University who learned basic drafting skills on the program Chappell Simplicity, created by Seiki Tsushima in Japan, who showed him how to use it. Graves later designed the furniture, murals, and exhibitions at the Berkeley Graduate School of Business. He also designed student housing at Rice University for a graduate program in engineering, planning, and management, and taught undergraduate architecture. Graves also designed the Post Office Building in Austin, Texas.
Roche was a vice president at Kodak and also served as a director of five major American industrial companies including Allied Signal, Groupe Bull, and Trippco. He was also cofounder and vice chairman of the Cable and Wireless Communications business.
AutoCAD (1982)
AutoCAD's first release was in 1982 for the Apple II, IIe, III, IIIc and IIgs (IIgs) line of computers. After the release of AutoCAD 1, the US Army provided funding to create a new typeface, the Cedit family, to be used in CAD programs, which include AutoCAD 1. Development of AutoCAD began in 1979 under the guidance of Alexander Nusbaum, and was led by Graves and Ralph Ciardelli (1929-2008), a senior draftsman at Boston Sand & Gravel who had been an AutoCAD beta tester, and an Apple II programmer at the time, and who was recruited by Graves to lead the team.
