The Photoshop Image
For most of us, we often think of a picture as a "picture of" something. However, a picture is actually a slice of an image. If you want to have a picture of a house, it actually consists of a slice of a digital image. You can think of the image as a 2D array, or matrix, that has RGB (red, green, blue) pixel values. These pixels are arranged in rows and columns that can span your monitor screen or even have other dimensions.
After you capture the image and save it, it becomes a picture on its own, as shown in Figure 2-1. Photoshop can make changes to this image, much as if you were to paint directly onto a canvas.
The layers in Photoshop are similar to the canvas in painting. You place a canvas on the surface of an image and paint directly onto the canvas. You have the same capability in Photoshop: You can place a new layer onto an image and paint directly onto it.
Photoshop's most useful tool is the eraser (a.k.a. the lasso tool), which lets you paint directly onto an image. The canvas (a.k.a. the layer), which holds the image, and any other painted objects (a.k.a. the layer mask) can all be erased to change the image's final appearance, just as they can in painting.

You create a new layer by activating the layer palette and dragging a new layer on to your image. A new layer is always above the existing layers. A group of layers is sometimes known as a stack. There can be as many as 16 of them.
The layer palette, shown in Figure 2-2, offers you many methods of adding the new layer. You also can create a new group by dragging the layers you want to group into a new palette window.
