AutoCAD was originally written by Norman A. Woodland in 1981 as AutoDWG, and was originally called AutoDWG2. The name was later changed to AutoCAD.
AutoDWG was a batch graphics program with user interface inspired by a similar program called "Batch File".
Autodesk bought the rights to AutoDWG on July 11, 1987, renaming the program to AutoCAD.  The main difference between AutoDWG and AutoCAD is that the latter included CAD.  AutoCAD was originally released as an expensive product, but from the early 1990s onwards Autodesk lowered its prices and made CAD software freely available to individuals as part of the 
AutoCAD LT package. 
In February 1990, Autodesk introduced the AutoCAD R12 and R12-1R, a significant new redesign of the software.
AutoCAD RT (Routerset)
AutoCAD RT (Routerset) is an AutoCAD drawing creation program originally developed by John Ford of Avanex.
Routerset, which debuted with AutoCAD 3.0, featured a graphical interface and a menu bar. It is also the first version that added the "standard" interface, which was based on 2D graphics, but also capable of using 3D graphics on some programs (e.g. Revit).
It also included a "command bar" feature, where 3D commands could be placed on the "command bar" and accessed by pressing the up and down arrow keys.
Routerset lost the "command bar" feature when AutoCAD 4.0 was released.
Routerset also introduced a number of features that were common in the 1994 version of Adobe Pagemaker: a clip box, which allows you to draw on "pages" inside the drawing; 3D viewport editing; time-saving options such as layers and templates; file saving options such as PDF, CADDWG, and CXF; and automatic, user-friendly B-rep editing of various components such as walls and columns.
