She comes to the back of the class and stands by me, bringing the pungent odour of her body perfume.
'Excuse me, sir. Your name is Gautam, isn't it?'
'No, sir. Gautam _is_ my name.' I don't like the way she keeps saying my name. 'What do you want to know, Ms Rekha? I'm in class nine.'
'It's not that, Gautam,' she says. 'This is about your sister, isn't it? The one who was in hospital?'
I nod.
'The one I told you about?' she says.
'Yes, Ms Rekha, the one who is still in the hospital, and you said she was your sister, I remember that.'
She looks at me sideways, as if making sure that I'm not telling her a big secret. Then she says, 'She's my step-sister.'
'Is she sick?'
'Yes, she was sick for a long time. I don't know if she'll ever get better.'
I nod. 'I'm sorry.'
'It's okay. Tell me, Gautam, have you been doing well in your studies?'
'Yes. I'm doing very well.'
'And in sports?'
'Of course.'
'Do you play any sports?'
'No.'
'Oh, come on. I'm talking about marbles.'
'What?'
'Mere kabaddi.'
'I don't play any kind of sports.'
'No fair. Look, I'll be really honest with you. You are my favourite student in the class. I like your eyes. And it's easy to tell you've got a good brain. I just want to know if you like maths.'
'Not very much. I do ok.'
