A bit of history, this progam was written as an afterthought. A number of people have been asking for a free lunar calendar, and I thought "Why not?". It was originally meant to be a lunar-eclipse finder, but it turned into a lunar-eclipse predictor as well. (I won't repeat the obvious link to The Moon's phases.) There are settings for calculations based on the input of a date (mm/dd/yyyy), a moon phase (0-1, where 0 is full moon and 1 is new), and a starting day (not necessary and just for fun). The solunar calendar calculates the length of time until the next lunar eclipse. Most major free lunar calendars will do that for you, but this program does it because I wanted it to be cross-platform (in other words, the planetarium mode should be the same for Earth orbiting bodies in the solar system and Mars). The lunar eclipse predictor looks for lunar eclipses in the next few centuries based on the Julian calendar. The lunar-eclipse duration is computed based on the geographic position of the eclipse, the tumblers, and the predicted lunar-configuration by the solunar calendar. It is true that the tumblers determine the duration of an eclipse as short or long as the map of the tumblers is done within the bounds of the solar system, but the eclipse duration is quite a lot longer than the sun/moon transit across the ecliptic (it's a few weeks). I wanted to pick a solar system map that gave reasonable results, and this one by David Scott did very well. I also implemented the factor of the moon's albedo in the moon's light intensity (which is incorporated into the solunar calendar). The Moon's phases are based on Jack Cowan's www.cowan.org ephemeris (which is used by the planetary-ephemeris.net site), and the solunar calendar is based on Chris Whillans' very cool www.nodes.noaa.gov solunar program. It took me a while to make the solunar calendar work, so I hope the program works as described and not like it did for William.
