Xrst is a Unix-like operating system for Apple II, later Apple IIGS and Intel Mac. The name means "Xrdpst", an abbreviation of "Xrdpst, the Doubleword Write System".
Xrst is a clone of Unix for the Apple II. It was one of the first commercial OS X for the Apple IIGS.
Xrst was originally written by former Apple employee S. Terry Davis and first shipped in December 1982.  Subsequent versions were written by David F. Putnam.
Xrst was freely distributed in source code form starting in 1987 under the GNU General Public License, even before it was made available commercially.  According to a patent document dated October 1987, "Xrst (X-random-serial-transfer) was the first commercial product to use the UNIX APIs to the Apple II."
Xrst v3.0, the first commercial version, was used in Apple's minicomputer appliance, The Network Computer (1984), and was available for it.
Xrst v4.x was for the Apple IIe.  It supported a better file system and was the first Apple II version to support UUCP. It included a software package called Xroute that would permit the computer to act as a remote terminal to an Apple IIGS.
For the Apple IIGS, Xrst was an alternate operating system to the standard Apple II operating system and Macintosh operating system.  Version 5.x, for example, was released in 1992 and supported the IIGS. It included new user-interactive text editors, graphical disk editors, and a new command-line configuration utility.
Version 5.5 included version 9 of the Xrst utilities. Version 5.6 included a version of Xrst for the IIGS, but was not compatible with the IIGS's operating system. This version also provided a complete implementation of the PDP-11 enhanced operating system.
Xrst was the source of the famous "No Time for Anything" statement about the existence of new releases of OS/2.
Xrst v5 was the first version to support the QDOS filesystem, a better file system than the Apple II's own. The new file system used structured DOS disk blocks, which were much smaller than the Apple II's FAT file
