But why would anyone want to have a medical drone flying above them?
It could save lives. "In the United States, roughly, there are approximately 200,000 people who have had a heart attack a year. About half of those are saved, if we can get someone there in the first five minutes of a heart attack," says Brookie Reid, co-founder of MIRA. That's why MIRA, a startup developing smart airborne robotics, plans to deliver a type of medical drone to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and MedStar hospitals in Pittsburgh later this year.

The robot, which looks like a toy helicopter, is just one of a wide variety of emerging technologies currently being developed by startups and established companies to save lives in the home, on the road, and in the workplace. In addition to MIRA, the list includes:
1. Amazon's delivery drone
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says his drones are part of his company's plans to deliver packages to consumers' doors within 30 minutes of an online order. But there are also skeptics who see the technology as a way for Amazon to steal customers from its rivals and fill its warehouses with lots of overstock inventory. Some don't see the promised big benefits, like reduced shipping times, until a delivery drone flies a few miles above our heads.
2. Uber Eats
Uber Eats isn't worried about its chicken wings being delayed by drone deliveries. The company is partnering with Kroger to deliver them to customers in 12 states. The collaboration is part of a broader push by Amazon to build out its grocery delivery network by partnering with numerous major retailers to provide the food.
3. High-speed personal drones
High-speed personal drones are already making their way to our doorsteps. Traveling at speeds between 50 and 80 miles per hour, they can reach thousands of feet in the air and move with the agility of a butterfly, making them suitable for aerial surveillance, search-and-rescue, and transportation.
